Discovery, immersion

As soon as I arrived in 2013, my eyes focused on East London and the district of Brick Lane ,Spitalfields. I discovered an architectural complex in the middle of which stands a brick tower, the heritage of the old brewery on which one can read the name TRUMAN, formerly TRUMAN'S. Today, this complex houses design agencies, companies, pop-up shops, galleries and finally its famous markets.

All of this activity generates a particular energy that is constantly buzzing. Brick Lane is also known for its street art, which is abundantly present in its streets and alleys. This street art coexists fully with the old Truman Brewery, which houses numerous works by artists such as Banksy, D-Face, Shepard Fairey, Shock-1 and many others.

All these points of interest, this particular energy will inspire me to decide to stay and work there, and thus register as the first person to represent this space through the realization of a series of dedicated posters.

Designs / process

Street photography will be my driving force, as soon as I arrive for a period of more than 6 months, which will allow me to open my eyes to the human, the everyday, the architecture, the street art, and thus allow me to constitute a large bank of images, which will be used as a basis for my work. I will then select all the major elements from these photos, and thus be able to compose from this large and varied choice to produce the first series of posters in 2014. The Truman Tower will be one of the major and central elements of my work.

The design will be oriented towards the movie posters of the 70's and 80's, in the style of Bill Gold and Philip Castle, masters of brush and photoengraving posters. These representations can be interpreted as metaphors of my relationship to these spaces.

From 2018 onwards, I have chosen to keep the same graphic charter and to widen the geographical prism, using 'East End' as a title, rather than Brick Lane. My hope is that in time I will be able to represent the areas from Brick Lane to Hackney, including Shoreditch, and highlight their specificity.

Digital printing will continue to be favoured, in order to offer affordable rates, adapted to a wide audience.

The year 2022 will be a starter to start screen-printing all these posters, which are only available as pre-orders via the website.

My approach

My approach is to invite the public to discover and appropriate the spaces represented in my work, to take the time to read them and understand how they work

The ASTERONYME gallery as a relay of exhibition and sale has been helping to convey these messages for nearly eight years and to be able to put them into practice.
